What Is GAPS? Understanding The GAPS Protocol

Healing Begins in the Gut

What if many chronic health challenges don’t actually begin where the symptoms appear—but in the gut?

When parents first hear about the GAPS Nutritional Protocol, they’re often surprised to learn that it isn’t simply another diet. Instead, it’s a comprehensive nutritional and lifestyle approach that seeks to restore gut health, creating the foundation for the body and brain to heal naturally.

Whether you’re searching for answers to digestive issues, eczema, allergies, behavioural concerns, or simply want to build a healthier future for your family, understanding GAPS is the first step on that journey.

What Does GAPS Stand For?

GAPS stands for:

  • Gut and Psychology Syndrome
  • Gut and Physiology Syndrome

These two terms describe how poor gut health can affect not only the digestive system but also the brain and many other systems throughout the body.

The GAPS Protocol was developed by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a neurologist and nutritionist who became fascinated by the relationship between gut health and brain function.

During her clinical practice, she noticed something remarkable.

Many of her patients with learning, behavioural and emotional challenges also struggled with digestive problems. As their gut health improved, many of their symptoms improved as well.

Over the years, Dr. Natasha worked with hundreds of children diagnosed with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, allergies, asthma and eczema. She observed that an unhealthy gut was often a common thread running through many of these conditions.

These observations became the foundation of the GAPS Nutritional Protocol.

The Core Principle Behind GAPS

At the heart of GAPS is one simple but powerful idea:

Heal the gut, and you create the foundation for the body and brain to heal.

Our digestive system does far more than simply digest food. It plays an essential role in nutrient absorption, immune function, hormone regulation, detoxification, and communication with the brain.

When the gut is unhealthy, its effects may be felt throughout the body. For some people, this may appear as digestive discomfort, eczema, allergies or asthma. For others, it may show up as fatigue, anxiety, mood challenges, autoimmune conditions, or difficulties with learning and behaviour.

Rather than focusing only on managing symptoms, GAPS seeks to address the underlying imbalance by restoring gut health.

How Does the GAPS Protocol Support Healing?

The GAPS Nutritional Protocol uses a holistic approach that includes:

  • Nutrient-dense whole foods
  • Healing meat stocks and bone broths
  • Healthy traditional animal fats
  • Fermented foods to replenish beneficial bacteria
  • Lifestyle practices that support natural healing
  • Gentle detoxification strategies to reduce the body’s toxic burden

Together, these approaches aim to nourish the gut, restore microbial balance, and support the body’s remarkable ability to heal.

A Journey of Hope

Healing doesn’t happen overnight.

The GAPS journey requires patience, consistency, and commitment. But for many families around the world, it has offered something they had been searching for for years—hope.

For more than two decades, the GAPS Protocol has been used in clinics worldwide to support children and adults facing a wide range of chronic health challenges.

Every healing journey is unique, but one truth remains at the heart of GAPS:

Healing begins in the gut.
